Want to get some inspiration for your opening lines in your marketing? Then take a look at the top 100 opening lines in novels. In fact, you don’t need to look at the top 100, you can just walk down to your local library and pick a book by a top author. Anything by a seasoned author will show you why they are masters of their craft. The best opening book lines satisfy all the main criteria for what makes a great opening line in any direct marketing, namely;
- They set the scene, and the pattern, for the rest of the book’s pace
- They are original, and unique. In fact, you could probably look at the line and guess the book
- They are interesting, and draw the reader in. You want to know what the next line will be
- They are engaging and immediately fire the imagination.
My favourite has to be the line from 1984:
“It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.”
