Google Places is the new primary goal for SEO experts. There are a lot of things you can do to increase your chances of being listed high, such as making sure you claim your listing in the first place. However there is one thing that will make all the difference, and that is making sure you have your address and telephone number listed in as many places as possible. This increases the number of local citations you have for your address, and increases the authority for your business.
However there are some citations that matter more than others. First it depends heavily on your industry. Hotels get a different set of Authority listings to Plumbers. Second the rating you might get on that website matters too. If you listing on other websites doesn’t have any ratings, then it is unlikely that the listing will be taken seriously.

Hi Robert,
This is quite a useful list. I thought I might suggest adding http://www.StartLocal.com.au into the list of local citations as it has over 1.5 million monthly visits and has won a few hitwise awards.
Cheers!
Brad
Sweet, nice list. I am gaining some good citations for my clients using the whitespark tool, but there are a good few on this list that I havent come across – nice work pal.
